SYNOPSIS

Maila, a basket weaver, his wife Maili and their seven-year-old son Bindre live a simple village life in the mountainous region of eastern Nepal.

When a road to their village is finally built, they see it as a blessing. Soon, along with the first bus, sodas, television, and hip hop beats begin to permeate their once-tranquil surroundings.

“The film is about the change in the father-son relationship brought about by a newly built road in the remote eastern Himalayas of Nepal.” But as modern amenities creep in, Maila's life begins to unravel. He's trapped between sticking to tradition at home or going beyond the village to survive.

ABOUT THE FILM

A Road to a village delves into the existential dilemma faced by Maila, the basket weaver, as he grapples with the impact of modern amenities on his way of life. The construction of the road symbolizes the arrival of new possibilities and influences, bringing with it the allure of convenience and entertainment.

At the heart of the film lies Maila’s internal conflict, representing a broader philosoph- ical inquiry into the human condition. He is confronted with a choice between holding onto the familiar traditions and values of his village or venturing beyond its boundaries in search of a better life. This dilemma mirrors the struggle faced by individuals in an ever-changing world, where the allure of progress often clashes with the desire to pre- serve cultural heritage and personal identity.

Through the character of Bindre, the film also explores the notion of adaptability and resourcefulness. Bindre’s curiosity and willingness to embrace the new gifts

brought by the road represent the human capacity for adaptation and growth in the face of change. His actions suggest that there can be a harmonious coexistence be- tween tradition and progress, as long as one remains open to exploration and finds creative ways to navigate the evolving landscape.

Ultimately, the film raises profound questions

about the nature of progress, the importance of

cultural preservation, and the individual’s search

for meaning and belonging. It prompts viewers

to reflect on their own relationship with tradition

and progress, and to contemplate the complexi-

ties of navigating a world that constantly pushes

us to redefine our identities and values.:
